Some actions can be accelerated using the Joy-Con controller’s motion controls, but others allow the game to play perfectly when Joy-Con is connected to the switch. For example, Mario has a killer to fly through big gaps, a tyrannosaurus to trample things, an electric discharge called a spark pylon to climb an electric wire, a tank called a sham to shoot enemies and break blocks for passage. Mario can throw lids at specific objects, enemies, or NPCs and own them, called “grabs,” and use his unique abilities. In addition to existing movements such as the triple jump and wall jump, Mario puts the physical form of the cap, the hat named Cappy, in multiple directions to attack enemies and use it as a temporary platform.
At some levels, similar to his appearance in the original Super Mario Bros., there is an area called the “flat” zone where Mario is placed in a 2D side-scrolling environment. Checkpoint flags scattered throughout the kingdom allow Mario to move to checkpoints immediately upon activation. In each kingdom, Mario seeks out and clears various targets to acquire an item called Mighty Moon, which is the energy source for the Odyssey and provides access to new kingdoms. The in-game kingdom returns to the exploration-based level design introduced in Super Mario 64. Super Mario Odyssey is a platform game where players control Mario to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser, who is planning to marry forcibly, while traveling through various worlds known as the kingdom in hat-shaped Odyssey. By December 2020, the game had sold over 20 million copies and became one of Switch’s best-selling games.
It has also won numerous awards, including the Game of the Year, and has since been considered one of the best games ever. Super Mario Odyssey has been hailed as one of the best games in the series, especially for its ingenuity and originality. The game also includes the first Jump Super Stars vocal theme song in the series. The team designed Super Mario Odyssey to appeal to the mainstream fans of the series in the Super Mario 3D World for the general public.
Different from previous releases such as New Super Mario Bros. Various ideas were proposed during the development process, and the team decided to use the sandbox style to put them all together. The game was developed by Nintendo’s Entertainment Planning and Development Department and began shortly after Super Mario 3D World was released in 2013. Unlike the linear gameplay of previous games, the game reverts to the predominantly open 3D gameplay introduced in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. Followed by Mario and Cappy, a perceptual hat recorded in the Super Mario series that allows Mario to control other characters and objects as he travels through different kingdoms and rescues Princess Peach from the enemy Bowser. Super Mario Odyssey is a 2017 platformer developed and released by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch.
